ESFNAThank you to all who came out and made a difference in the lives of the children while having a great time doing it.

It takes a lot to keep a school of 160 students that also provides meals for the children and their families running. While the task can seem daunting, it is a lot easier when we throw fun into the mix. We did just that, last month, when we hosted our 6th annual Poker/Casino Night fundraiser in New York City!

The night was filled with excitement and competition and six lucky winners took home amazing prize packages donated by so many generous companies.

The top three blackjack and poker players took home prize packages valued over $1,000 each and the final tables all received premium wine from NY Vintners and Tommy Vanik as well has haircuts from Cutting Edge Fred and massages from Physical Advantage Massage Therapy and Georgette Williams.

Our lucky raffle winner received a Proenza Schouler hand bag valued at over $1,600!

We were fortunate to have NYC Fair Trade Coalition Blogger, Amber  Harkonen, in attendance. See what she had to say.

Thanks again to those who made it out and a special thank you our many sponsors. Please be sure to patronize these business:

Proenza Schouler, Dirty2Purdy, Joe Joseph’s Photography, Duxiana Bed Co., Dr. Gregg Rubinstein, Rituals Cosmetic, Red Bass Brewing, The Shubert Organization, NY Vintners, Kate Hildebrandt Structural Integration, Da Marino Restaurant, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Crema Mexican Restaurant, Louis Licari, Desmond’s Steak House, H2 Windsurfing, Aperitivo, Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Da Noi, Dana Matthow, David Allen Marketing, Advanced Skin Care, Tony Robles and Amsterdam Billiards, City Crab, Big Daddy’s, Duke’s, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, Robert Essel Photography, Movement Fitness, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Richart Chocolate, 46th Street Stationhouse, Georgette Williams, and Wall Street Walks

A great time was had by all and you helped us raise $11,000 for the children!

You can continue to make a difference by sponsoring a child or creating your own fundraising page and getting your friends and family involved too!

Together we can change the world!

YES I WANT TO CONTINUE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Meet Founder and Director of Fresh and Green Academy, Muday Mitiku

Muday – The Heart and Soul of Fresh and Green Academy

Friends of Fresh and Green Academy was inspired by the Fresh and Green Academy in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, a school founded 12 years ago by a local Ethiopian teacher, Muday Mitiku.  Friends of Fresh and Green helps support the children of the academy with funds for food, education, and a safe environment so Muday can continue the school and its crucial work within the larger community.

Muday was born an only child in Kasanchis, Addis Ababa.  She was enrolled in a private school from kindergarten and continued there until the sixth grade, after which she enrolled in government school; Garji. She has been a member of the Baha’i religion from the age of nine and started teaching children at the Baha’i center when she was fifteen.

Muday started her secondary education at Bole Medaham then joined a teachers college; B.G.K. in 1999 for a diploma in teaching and later pursued Business Management at City College.

Muday’s teaching and business training, as well as her experience teaching at the Baha’i center, motivated her to open her own learning institution.  She started Fresh and Green as a “for profit” kindergarten in 2000 with a business partner. When she started to bring in kids off the streets, free of charge, the school lost money. Muday soon partnered with Friends of Fresh and Green Academy and, with hard work, dedication, and help from many generous donors, the school has since become a beacon of hope for the community.

Today, with help from many people, Fresh and Green Academy is providing 125 in-need children with education and nutrition. Along with the government required curriculum, the students enjoy classes in Art, Music, English, Computers, and Values and Morals. The children and their families are now drinking clean water as well.

Muday is a friend, wife, mother, and visionary.  Her passion has become our passion and Muday’s dream has become our dream. Together we all can make a difference in the world.

Support Fresh and Green Academy by Sponsoring a Child
November 8, 2011 – 6:56 am | 2 Comments

Monetary donations are a crucial part of the existence of Fresh and Green Academy and the “Child Sponsorship Program” helps guarantee the school will operate and the children will be fed. Every month barely enough money is sent to cover the costs of teachers salaries, food and rent. With your generous donations all the children will receive three meals a day and a quality education.

Approximate monthly school expenses:

Rent-$800.00

Salaries-$400.00

Mothers Coop Salaries-$1000.00 (From the sales of their goods)

Food for 140 children three times a day-$3000.00

For $35.00 a month, the price of a dinner out, you will help all 140 students of Fresh and Green Academy eat three nutritious meals a day, have access to medical care, and continue to thrive in a loving and caring learning environment.  You will receive periodic updates on the specific child you have sponsored but will be helping all the children.

Use the “Sponsor A Student” link to start helping today!

LEARNING AT FRESH AND GREEN by Angela Chukunzira

LEARNING AT FRESH AND GREEN

AngelaI was a volunteer at Fresh and Green and it ended up being a learning experience which transformed me beyond my imagination. The whole experience made me view the world from a whole new perspective. As a volunteer, you pass on various skills to the rest of the community without expecting anything in return but at Fresh and Green I got so much contentment and love from the entire community! I learnt that volunteering is more of interaction and connecting to the community. I taught spoken English and even learnt what it takes to be a teacher!

I learnt so much about myself and got a much deeper understanding of what life is about. I also acquired virtues I did not posses before like patience and thoughtfulness. Every Monday we had devotion in the “coffee room” and various religions were represented. It made me feel whole in that in as much as I did not understand the prayers and the language, I understood that God is universal. We also connected spiritually with other workers in the school.

I acquired a child-like innocence when I was singing with the children in the KG .Those kids have a burning urge to learn!! They were so eager to learn new things and were extremely receptive. I thought they would easily forget the songs I taught them but the next time I went they sang the song over and over again. Just to emphasize on how the kids desire to stay in school. In case one may wonder how eager they are to learn, they learnt to sing a song in Swahili (a language they barely know or hear about!).

Another outstanding element of Fresh and Green is the sustainability. Muday has not only taken the children out of the streets but has also set out to ensure that their mothers are getting a means to earn a living. She also guarantees the children 3 meals in a day. The mothers have formed a cooperative in which they make crafts and Habesha scarves for sale. They also assist in domestic tasks in the school. How sustainable can a system be? This goes ahead to abolish the dependence syndrome that I have observed in most charitable organizations which unfortunately are not sustainable. The plans that Fresh and Green have for the future are big! With the very spirit of sustainability transforming it to a boarding school in the outskirts of Addis Ababa in the near future will enable the children remain in school. This project’s sustainability really touched my heart.

My faith in humanity was equally restored. I left home not trusting ‘strangers’ because of my own personal encounters of theft and corruption I observed in my own social system. When I met Muday and learnt how hard she worked just to see to it that the children did not sleep hungry and in the streets, I felt a gap in my heart was re-filled. This attitude of giving was spread out to my fellow volunteers and most of the Ethiopian people. I later met Trish Hack, who valued those children as though they were her very own. In a culture that is saturated with individualism and consumerism, I am so glad that there are hearts willing to give themselves away for the sake of others. I am still grateful that humanity’s conscience is not completely lost.

Through my volunteer experience, I also made lifelong friends! My fellow volunteers with AIESEC firstly, the Addis Ababa University fraternity and I cannot forget to mention Glory Rain. She would give everything to see to it that Fresh and Green lives on. We traveled to other parts of Ethiopia together and made memories to last a lifetime.

Living by example is what Muday lived by. She lived a life of simplicity and her own children are enrolled at Fresh and Green. This goes to show she firmly believes in the system and in making a difference. The simple lives led by Fresh and Green community members constantly reminded me that a happy heart and good health are the fundamentals of life. Though my volunteer experience is over, I continually fall in love with the community so closely knit. They say home is where the heart is, and for me, it is Fresh and Green, Addis Ababa. My heart is open and a new life continues to bloom within.
